Switchboard Upgrades Gold Coast, Logan & Brisbane South
Queensland electrical contractor · ECL 1506689
The switchboard is the control centre of your property's electrical system, distributing power safely to every circuit and housing the safety switches and circuit breakers that protect people and equipment. Many older switchboards were never designed for the number of appliances and devices used in homes and businesses today, which is one of the main reasons upgrades are needed.

Customer reviews
Read our customer reviewsSigns your switchboard needs upgrading
An older switchboard may still use ceramic fuses rather than modern circuit breakers, have no safety switches fitted at all, or show visible signs of wear such as discolouration, rust, or a cracked casing. Frequent tripping, a board that feels warm, or a buzzing sound coming from inside the enclosure are also signs the board should be assessed.
If you are adding significant new electrical load to a property, such as an electric vehicle charger, air conditioning, or a home office, the existing switchboard may not have capacity for the additional circuits, and an upgrade may be required to accommodate the new demand safely.
What an upgrade typically involves
A switchboard upgrade generally involves replacing the old board and its components with a new enclosure fitted with modern circuit breakers and safety switches for each circuit, laid out clearly and labelled for easy identification. This improves protection against both electrical faults and electric shock, since safety switches are designed to cut power quickly if a fault to earth is detected.
Because the whole property loses power while the switchboard is disconnected and replaced, this work requires a planned shutdown. We explain the expected duration beforehand so you can plan around it, whether that is a short residential upgrade or a staged commercial changeover.
Safety first during switchboard work
Switchboard work is only ever carried out by a licensed electrician, with supply isolated at the point of connection before any work begins on the board itself. Once the new board is installed, every circuit is tested to confirm correct operation of breakers and safety switches before power is restored.
All switchboard installations are completed in accordance with AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules, covering circuit protection, labelling and safety switch requirements appropriate to the property type.
Queensland safety switch requirements
Safety switch obligations depend on the property and when it was built, sold or altered. Queensland rental homes require safety switch protection for power point circuits. For a home built before 1992 that is sold without this protection, the buyer must arrange it within three months. These are minimum legal triggers, not a complete assessment of every circuit.
A circuit breaker protects wiring against overload and short circuits; a safety switch detects current leakage. Ask an electrician to identify what protection is actually present and what the proposed work requires under AS/NZS 3000. Do not assume a row of circuit breakers means every circuit has safety switch protection.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
Signs include ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers, no safety switches fitted, frequent tripping, visible wear or discolouration on the board, or a buzzing sound. A licensed electrician can inspect the board and advise whether an upgrade is needed.
Will I lose power during a switchboard upgrade?
Yes, the property's power supply needs to be isolated while the old switchboard is disconnected and the new one installed and tested. This is scheduled in advance so you know how long the shutdown is expected to take.
What is the difference between a circuit breaker and a safety switch?
A circuit breaker protects wiring and equipment from overload and short circuits by cutting power to a circuit. A safety switch is designed to protect people, cutting power very quickly if it detects current leaking to earth, such as through a person touching a faulty appliance.
Do older homes need a switchboard upgrade before adding air conditioning?
It depends on the existing board's capacity. If there is no room for an additional circuit or the board is already at its limit, an upgrade or partial modification may be needed before new equipment such as air conditioning can be safely connected.
Are safety switches a legal requirement?
Safety switch requirements vary depending on property type and when the property was built or last had electrical work done. A licensed electrician can advise on the current requirements that apply to your property.
