Why air conditioning needs its own circuit
Air conditioning units draw significant power, particularly on start-up, which is why most systems require a dedicated circuit run directly from the switchboard rather than sharing an existing general power circuit. Running a unit off a shared circuit can cause nuisance tripping or overload the existing wiring, especially in older properties.
Signs that the electrical side of an air conditioning setup needs attention include a breaker that trips when the unit starts, a switchboard with no spare capacity for an additional circuit, or an existing isolator switch that is damaged, loose, or shows signs of heat discolouration.
Circuits and isolators we install
For a new air conditioning installation, this typically means running a new circuit from the switchboard to the outdoor unit location, fitting an appropriately rated circuit breaker, and installing an isolator switch near the outdoor unit so power can be safely disconnected for servicing. Depending on the switchboard's existing capacity, this may also involve confirming there is room for the new circuit breaker or recommending a switchboard upgrade if not.
We work to the manufacturer's electrical specifications for the unit being installed, including cable sizing and circuit protection, and in accordance with AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules for the circuit and isolator installation.

Frequently asked questions
Do you install the air conditioning unit itself or just the electrical work?
Yes, we supply and install the complete system. The unit, refrigerant pipework, dedicated electrical circuit, isolator, any switchboard work and commissioning are all handled in one job by licensed technicians.
Does a new air conditioner need its own circuit?
In most cases, yes. Air conditioning units generally require a dedicated circuit from the switchboard due to their power draw, particularly during start-up, rather than sharing an existing general power circuit.
What is an isolator switch and why does my air conditioner need one?
An isolator switch allows power to the outdoor unit to be safely disconnected, which is required before any servicing or maintenance work on the unit can be carried out. It is typically installed close to the outdoor unit.
Why does the circuit trip when my air conditioner starts up?
This can happen if the unit is sharing a circuit that was not designed for its power draw, or if there is a fault with the circuit or unit. It is worth having a licensed electrician check whether a dedicated circuit is needed.
Can my existing switchboard handle a new air conditioning circuit?
This depends on the available capacity in your existing switchboard. An electrician can check whether there is room for an additional circuit breaker or whether a switchboard upgrade is needed first.
